Cleaning Velvet Dining Chairs

Amy Field
Our easy guide to cleaning your velvet dining chairs:

Our velvet dining chairs are fantastically practical as the 300gsm Oeko-Tex 100 fabric cleans very easily. Most spillages clean up without a trace with a damp clean cloth . However, if you do get a more stubborn stain do follow the steps below to help remove it from your velvet dining chairs.

Materials You’ll Need:
  • A soft-bristle brush or a lint roller
A clean cloth, microfiber cloths are ideal
Distilled water
Mild dishwashing detergent
A small bowl
A spray bottle
A vacuum cleaner with an upholstery attachment (optional)

Step-by-Step guide below:
Check the Cleaning Label:
Before you start cleaning your velvet dining chairs, check if there is a cleaning label or care instructions on the chair. Follow any manufacturer recommendations if available.
Remove Loose Dirt and Dust:
Begin by using a soft-bristle brush or a lint roller to gently remove loose dirt, dust, and pet hair from the velvet surface. Brush in the direction of the nap (the direction in which the fabric naturally lies). You can also use a vacuum cleaner for this with the brush attachment.
Test an Inconspicuous Area:
Before using any cleaning solution, test a small, inconspicuous area of the chair (there’s usually a bit of fabric that overlaps the underside of the chair, this might be a good place to try). Give it a try and make sure there’s no damage to fabric, checking how it dries. If you are happy then clean the rest of the chair.
Prepare a Cleaning Solution:
In a small bowl, mix a few drops of mild dishwashing detergent with filtered water to create a gentle cleaning solution. Ensure it is well diluted.
Spot Clean Stains:
Dampen a clean cloth , microfiber works really well, with the diluted cleaning solution. Blot (do not rub) the stained area gently. Work from the outside of the stain towards the center to prevent it from spreading.
Continue to blot and lift the stain until it is removed. Be patient, as it may take several attempts for stubborn stains.
Rinse and Blot:
Dampen another clean cloth with distilled water and blot the cleaned area to remove any soap residue.
Air Dry:
Allow the cleaned area to air dry completely.
Brush the Nap:
Once the chair is completely dry, use a soft-bristle brush to gently fluff and restore the nap of the velvet. Brush in the direction of the nap to maintain its appearance.
Regular Maintenance:
To keep your velvet dining chairs looking their best, regularly vacuum and brush them to remove surface dust.
Note:
Avoid using harsh chemicals, bleach, or abrasive cleaners on velvet, as they can damage the fabric.
Do not soak the velvet as this can cause the fabric to lose its shape or develop watermarks.
If you’re dealing with a particularly stubborn stain or unsure about cleaning the chairs yourself, consider hiring a professional cleaner to avoid any potential damage.
By following these steps and using gentle cleaning methods, you can effectively make cleaning velvet dining chairs an easy process and keep the velvet in top condition.
